Traveling Safely During the Era of COVID-19

St. Pete-Clearwater International airport has increased precautionary steps in response to the spread of COVID-19 by expanding sanitizing procedures and safety measures. St. Pete/Clearwater (Pinellas County) has a mandatory indoor mask/face covering order in place. Masks or face coverings are required while in the terminal and the airport is providing complimentary masks with mask dispensers located at all entrances, TSA checkpoint entries and the Visitor Information Booth. Masks are also required while riding the free airport shuttle to and from the Economy Lot.

PIE follows the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Departmental of Health (DOH) and will modify operations as needed. Airline ticket counters and TSA Security Checkpoints are open two hours before scheduled flight departure and passengers are encouraged to arrive two hours prior to flight departure.  Allegiant ticket counters are open only when flights are operating. Note that Allegiant requires masks or face coverings while on their airplanes. Sun Country Airlines will resume operating flights to Gulfport-Biloxi, MS on July 19. Sunwing Airlines temporarily suspended operations until further notice. Check each airline for updated information.

Tampa International Airport recently unveiled its “TPA Ready” plan to keep passengers and employees safe during the COVID-19 crisis. The plan outlines measures for social distancing, enhanced cleaning, reduced seating and mask use. TPA continues modified operations and fliers are encouraged to check specific airline requirements before planning any trips. Masks or face coverings are also required at TPA and all other indoor locations in the Tampa area (Hillsborough County).

TPA has also announced a new on-site Covid-19 testing program in partnership with BayCare Health System that is an optional, paid service for travelers. Available in the month of October on a walk-in basis from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Main Terminal near the Airside F Shuttle, TPA's program will offer rapid antigen tests (at a cost of $57) as well as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests (at a cost of $125). Testing will be open to all ticketed passengers who are flying (or who have flown within three days, with proof of travel). The rapid antigen test takes only 15 minutes for results, providing travelers with valuable information as they arrive or depart from Tampa.

Additionally, TPA has collaborated with Flagship Janitorial Cleaning Services to deploy several new technological devices to increase its airport cleaning protocol. For example, the TPA’s newest robot software ensures the airport’s handrails are continuously sanitized, requiring minimal manpower. TPA also plans to install “smart restroom” software from TRAX Analytics to gather information on restroom cleanliness by monitoring restroom traffic flow. Other sanitation-related technology will include:

  • Kaivac: Used for restroom cleaning and disinfecting, this system allows for touchless cleaning of restroom floors and large surfaces using a pressure washing method.
  • Karcher misters: This sprays disinfectant evenly on all surfaces, which allows to clean large areas in short periods of time.
  • Victory electrostatic sprayers: With positively charged particles that evenly adhere to surfaces, these will be used to disinfect touchpoints and surfaces such as elevator buttons and tabletops.
  • T7 Autonomous auto scrubbers: The auto scrubber is programmed to scrub an area while the employee can perform other duties.

What's New and Up-and-Coming at PIE

St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport has several improvement projects underway. Visitors are urged to allow more travel time while construction is underway.

The food, beverage, news and gifts concessions are also under renovations by a new master concessionaire, SSP-Hudson. Soon, visitors can expect to see The District Pub (pre-security on the second floor), Dunkin' (three locations), 3 Daughters Brewing (gates 2-6), and News & Gifts by Hudson. The addition of local favorites 3 Daughters Brewing and Mazzaro's is especially exciting, bringing locally owned businesses to PIE. At this time, Mazzaro's Italian Market (gates 7-11) and Market 361 is open for departing passengers.

PIE has a heartwarming new Pets Uplifting People therapy dog program, which provides dogs to greet travelers who are waiting to board flights. In addition, the airport now has "Bark Parks" - fenced pet relief areas for guests traveling with their own dogs. The Bark Parks have benches, watering stations and other amenities.

The next big project at PIE is underway - the $24 million rehabilitation of Runway 18-3, which includes rehabilitation of the asphalt pavement and installation of new edge lighting. The work is expected to be completed by spring 2021.

Road Construction Around PIE

A road construction project is underway around PIE in preparation for the Gateway Expressway Project, which will create two elevated tolled roadways to reduce traffic congestion in the area. It's unlikely that you'll experience any significant delays due to the construction, but please plan a little extra travel time to and around PIE until the project is completed.

The Wall Street Journal recently named TPA the best midsize airport in the country in its annual survey ranking the nation's best large and midsize airports. Also, J.D. Power recently named TPA as the third-highest in passenger satisfaction among mega airports. TPA is located about 45 minutes from St. Pete/Clearwater's award-winning beaches and six miles west of downtown Tampa. One of the benefits of flying into TPA is its centralized location, allowing you to easily visit both the beautiful beaches of St. Pete/Clearwater and the theme parks in Orlando. What's New and Up-and-Coming at TPA

After an almost billion-dollar makeover, Tampa International Airport is now home to a mix of 70 new shops, restaurants, kiosks and bars. Some of the distinctive local brands to take residence at TPA include Cafe by Mise en Place, Goody Goody, RumFish (from TradeWinds St. Pete Beach) and Ducky's. Foodies can also try chargrilled oysters at Ulele and sample locally brewed beer at Cigar City.

TPA also recently opened the Shoppes at Bayshore, a 6,300-square foot space showcasing national and local boutique brands including Tommy Bahama, Quiksilver and Bourbon and Bowties. A pop-up Tampa shop also holds a rotating display of local goods (delicious La Segunda pastries, anyone?).

The airport has recently added a new family-friendly amenity: dedicated nursing rooms for traveling mothers and babies. Three nursing rooms are now open (in the Main Terminal, Airside E and F) and additional rooms will open in Airside A and C later in 2020.

The third and final phase (slated to begin in 2020) will include the construction of a new Airside D with 16 gates capable of handling both domestic and international flights. In addition to major upgrades, there are several improvements in TPA's pipeline slated for the next few years such as water bottle filling station installation at each Airside to help reduce plastic waste, mothers' nursing rooms (expected by Spring 2020), Service Animal Relief Areas (SARAs), soon-to-come water dumping stations to empty liquids before entering TSQA checkpoints and E-gates to automate shuttle entry processes as biometrics make the international check-in process quicker.
