Recent storms left a lasting impact on the Seaside Seabird Sanctuary, causing damage to the property and temporarily displacing its feathered residents. The storm surge brought 3 to 4 feet of water across the sanctuary, resulting in significant flooding and water damage to all buildings on the premises. The sanctuary showed remarkable resilience, thanks to the efforts of staff, volunteers, and the wider community.

In the immediate aftermath, sanctuary staff prioritized the safety of their birds, relocating them to partner organizations. Raptors were transported to Bush Wildlife Sanctuary in Jupiter, Florida, while many other birds found temporary refuge at a sanctuary in Odessa, Florida. These partnerships, combined with a tremendous outpouring of support from the public, made it possible to ensure the safety and well-being of the sanctuary’s avian residents during the recovery period.

“We were completely blown away by how many people showed up to help us,” staff shared, expressing gratitude for the countless individuals who stepped up. Community members not only provided hands-on help but also offered encouragement and financial contributions to aid in the sanctuary’s recovery efforts.

Currently, the sanctuary is focused on fundraising to repair its netting and to rebuild other damaged structures. Despite the challenges, the Seaside Seabird Sanctuary is once again open to visitors, with all of its birds safely returned home and its hospital resuming care for new patients.

Thanks to the support of the dedicated community, the birds are back home, the hospital is open, and the sanctuary is Still Shining!
