Many Voices, One Nation Exhibit at the Woodson Museum

Dive Into America's 250 Years of History at the Woodson African American Museum

Exhibit: Many Voices, One Nation – Our Community
On View: July 2026 - January 2027

Many Voices, One Nation brings together nationally recognized Smithsonian resources with stories carefully curated by our local community, connecting the history of St. Pete and the Gulf Coast to the larger American story. It celebrates our city's unique place in the nation's history, showing how the people, events, and experiences of this region have helped shape the country we know today.

At the center of the exhibit stands a work of breathtaking scale and intention: a newly commissioned monumental mural by Najee Dorsey — acclaimed visual artist, curator, and founder of Black Art In America.

The mural is a visual narrative that bridges all four exhibition themes — from the first footprints on this continent through the Great Migration, the Civil Rights Movement, and into the present moment. It gives image to the stories of resilience, migration, resistance, and cultural contribution that have too often been omitted from traditional American history. Stand before it to reckon with the full weight and beauty of what has been survived, built, and handed down.

The mural weaves together all four exhibition themes, tracing a powerful journey from the first individuals of this continent through the Great Migration, the Civil Rights Movement, and into the present day. Through vibrant imagery, it brings to life stories of resilience, movement, courage, and cultural contributions that have too often been left out of traditional tellings of American history. As you stand before it, you're invited to reflect on the strength, sacrifice, creativity, and enduring legacy of the generations whose stories continue to shape our shared American experience.
