The Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum recently reopened after undergoing a $1 million renovation to expand its exhibit space, install new floors, add a catering kitchen and upgrade its restrooms, among other improvements. The museum celebrates both local Black history and the accomplishments of African Americans nationally by hosting rotating art exhibitions by recognized artists of color, along with community events throughout the year, including the annual Tampa Bay Collard Green Festival, Jazz in the Garden, Meet the Artist events and more. The museum also welcomes visitors on the second Saturday of each month as part of St. Pete’s monthly Artwalk Trolley route.
The museum is the first stop on the African American Heritage Trail, a walking trail with interpretive signage in the Deuces Live, one of St. Pete’s earliest Black neighborhoods. In front of the museum, visitors can see a stunning Black Lives Matter mural, an impressive work of art that was created by 17 local muralists and artists. The museum also supports the Woodson Warriors Scholarship, providing funds to help local Black students attend college.
About the Museum's Founder, Dr. WoodsonThe Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum is named for Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who was born in Virginia in 1875 to parents who were formerly enslaved. One of seven children, this scholarly leader worked as a sharecropper to help support his family. Although he didn’t start high school until he was 20, he went on to attend the University of Chicago and later received a PhD from Harvard University, as only the second African American to earn a doctorate from that prestigious university. (W.E.B. DuBois was the first.)
Woodson is also considered the father of Black History Month, having first proposed an annual celebration of “Negro History Week” in 1926. (Black History Month became an official designation in 1976.) Woodson, who died in 1950, is the author of more than 30 books.

I was very impressed by this museum and learned so much about St. Petersburg's history that I had never known before. I visited with my two teenage sons, and we all came away having learned something new. It was fascinating to discover how many familiar names around the city, such as schools and streets, honor people whose remarkable stories and contributions deserve to be remembered. Visitors can expect a very welcoming and engaging experience, as the staff are genuinely passionate about the museum and enjoy interacting with guests. The museum and the beautiful garden outside were both moving and inspiring. I truly hope many local schools bring their students here, because learning about the history of our community is so important. I grew up in Germany, where reminders of our own difficult past are an important part of everyday life. In my experience, remembering history is not about making people feel guilty. It is about learning from it, honoring those who came before us, and helping ensure that these injustices are never repeated. Thank you for preserving and sharing these important stories. This is a place that should be treasured by the community.
🌟 More Than a Museum — A Place of Pride, Culture, and Community ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We celebrated my cousin’s retirement at the Carter G. Woodson African American Museum, and it was absolutely beautiful! The artwork and garden are inspiring, and the whole space feels filled with history, love, and pride. The staff was professional, kind, and went above and beyond to make our family’s event special. Parking was easy, and security made us feel comfortable. It was the perfect place to honor my cousin’s journey and celebrate together. Truly a gem in St. Petersburg!

My husband and I had a beautiful experience at the Woodson African American Museum in St. Petersburg. Upon entry, we were greeted by Ms. Lynnette, who shared the lively and passion filled history of 22nd Street and it's thriving Wallstreet back in the day. I was so proud to hear it! There is an area of books that I'm going to make a special trip back to view. ALL of the art is so good, and most of it left me speechless. Be prepared to be rendered speechless and allow the Ancestors to speak to you. The sculptures on display were equally breathtaking. There is a garden out back that brought me to tears (my eyes are watering now as I remember.) Also large statue of Harriet Tubman is on display through August or September 2025. Prayerfully, you get to see her before she moves onto her next destination. I cried. We really need more spaces like the Woodson African American Museum. Representation is crucial. God willing, I will be able to make a large donation at some point. 🙏🏾💜
Had a beautiful experience and learned a lot about Sister Gertrude Morgan the featured exhibit. If I remember correctly Ms Vanessa informed me they change exhibits every quarter and feature a new person of our black history. There is a beautiful serenity garden behind the museum as well. If you live any where near the area or just visiting like I was, I urge you to visit this wonderful place. Within 5 years they will be dedicating a state of art museum that will be filled with lots of information about our black history!
