Fort De Soto Park
Fort De Soto Park
Popular Fort De Soto Park covers 1,136 acres spread across five islands on the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay. Here, you can wander along spacious, pristine beaches, explore a Spanish-America War-era fort, ride bikes along a seven-mile paved path, kayak in protected waters and play in the surf with your dog.
Important note: Fort De Soto Park is undergoing revitalization efforts after two storms in late 2024. However, many parts of the park are now open, including East Beach, the dog beach, the fishing pier, causeway, boat ramp and Area 3 campground. North Beach remains closed. Kayak rentals are not available at this time.
Family-Friendly Park
Fort De Soto Park’s wide, flat North Beach is known for being perfect for families. Kids can play on the pirate ship playground, then head to the beach to splash in the gentle waves. Afterward, climb to the top of the fort to see cannons and sweeping views.
Bike, Paddle and Fish in the Park
The park's seven-mile, paved trail is a favorite among walkers, runners and cyclists. Rent a canoe or kayak in the park and look for turtles, anhingas and dolphins. At the Dog Beach and Paw Playground, let your dog play off-leash by the water. Drop a line from the fishing pier near the dog beach, and pick up supplies at the bait and tackle shop.
Camp by the Water
Some of the campsites at Fort De Soto Park have views of the clear water and mangrove keys, and all have water, electricity, charcoal grills and picnic tables. Reserve a spot well in advance of your visit.
Accessibility at Fort De Soto Park
Fort De Soto Park is quite accessible to wheelchair users and other people with mobility challenges. The paved trail is great for wheelchair users. Other accessible areas of the park include the gift shop, snack shop and fort. There are also five beach wheelchairs available for use.
