Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19, in honor of Black history and as a commemoration of the day on June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Texas first learned that they were free. Although slavery had been abolished on January 1, 1863, with the Emancipation Proclamation, it was several years before the news spread to what was then largely frontier.
Today, Juneteenth celebrations throughout St. Pete-Clearwater honor the past and acknowledge the achievements of people of color in the U.S. today.
