The gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) is a threatened, keystone species that occurs in upland habitats in Florida, including living in Weedon Island Preserve. Gopher tortoises are ecosystem engineers that create extensive burrow systems and disperse seeds, significantly contributing to upland biodiversity. Local and well-known herpetologist George L. Heinrich will examine habitat restoration and management efforts to support gopher tortoises, and discuss the challenges of managing a natural area for wildlife that is bordered by urban interface.
