Artists in Residence: Opening Reception & Exhibit
May 1, 2024 – May 31, 2024On Saturday, May 11th from 5 - 9pm, the Morean Center for Clay welcomes viewers to begin bidding farewell to three of their Artists in Residence. The gallery will feature a trifecta of month-long exit exhibitions beginning with Ethan Fielder’s solo show titled Putting Out Fire. In the accompanying gallery, Israel Davis shares his unique Devil-May-Care solo exhibition until the end of May as well, bringing an explosion of mind boggling shapes and color combinations.
Ethan Fielder’s exhibition lives at an intersection between surrealism and the sublime through narrative sculpture. In his concentrated studio practice, he produces colorful sculptures made from memories collected during time spent in both natural and manufactured landscapes. These objects exist as portals into worlds where familiar objects hold space for dreaming and exploration.
Israel Davis, a professor and head of ceramics at Central Michigan University, curates his exhibition around the “devil-may-care” spirit of skateboarding and the heathenistic ethos of a rough-and-tumble youth. His work explores inherent risk as manifest through observation and action. The physical action of fragmentation coalesces with collaged imagery in guise of poetic surveillance and combines to create an imagery rich backdrop for memorable compositions.
These exhibitions are free and open to the public from Wednesday to Saturday,10am - 5pm. Both shows will be on display from May 1 - 31st.
