St. Pete/Clearwater (Jan. 10, 2018) - Thanks to a marketing partnership with a worldwide brand, Red Bull, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater is bringing a third Major League Soccer (MLS) club to St. Pete/Clearwater for preseason training.
Beginning Jan. 22, The New York Red Bulls will hold its preseason training at the Oldsmar Sports Complex, joining D.C. United and Philadelphia Union who hold training in Clearwater at the Walter C. Campbell Park and Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex, respectively.
"As the leader of sports and events programming for St. Pete/Clearwater, we couldn't be happier to host all three of these teams," said Tim Ramsberger, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater's Chief Operating Officer. "These partnerships help us promote our world-class destination in three important, cold-weather markets."
All of the partnerships include marketing exposure for St. Pete/Clearwater during the season back in New York, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia, along with the use of facilities locally, including the Oldsmar Sports Complex, which will host the newest addition, Red Bulls.
New York City is St. Pete/Clearwater's No. 2 market for visitors year-round.
"We are thrilled to welcome the Red Bulls and their fans to our distinct sports town," said Oldsmar Mayor Doug Bevis. "This is an important development for Oldsmar as we continue to bring diverse usage opportunities to the Oldsmar Sports Complex."
In addition to the Red Bulls, D.C. United and Union both renewed partnerships with Visit St. Pete/Clearwater to continue training in Clearwater. This will be the fourth year for the Union and second for D.C. United.
"Having those soccer clubs returning to Clearwater will not only benefit our youth soccer programs, but will also continue to promote the area as a sports tourism destination," said Clearwater Mayor George Cretekos. "Soccer is the international sport, and Clearwater hopes its relationship will help make Pinellas County the spring training headquarters for many other MLS soccer clubs."
Ramsberger added that VSPC's Sports & Events team will continue to strategically identify clubs that fit the destination's marketing objectives for potential partnerships.
