Where is the Piney Point plant located related to St. Pete/Clearwater?
The Piney Point plant is located north of Palmetto, in Manatee County, Florida. Manatee County is south of St. Pete/Clearwater (Pinellas County), and the two counties are connected by the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Because St. Pete/Clearwater covers a large geographic area, some cities within St. Pete/Clearwater (Pinellas County) are an hour's drive or more (approximately 56 miles) from the plant. It is too early to tell which areas will be affected by the water release. However, locations such as the waters around Port Manatee and Terra Ceia Preserve State Park in Manatee County may have adverse environmental effects, as well as other areas of the bay.

It is possible that the nutrients in the water release from Piney Point will increase nitrogen and phosphorus levels in Tampa Bay, resulting in algael blooms.
