Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades
Chaikovsky's most ambitious opera contains some of his greatest music and is a powerful study of destructive obsession. The Queen of Spades portrays a penniless soldier, Gherman, who has fallen in love with a woman who is engaged to his friend. Gherman learns that his love's grandmother is a Countess who knows a winning three-card formula and he is determined to wrestle the secret away, gain a fortune, and marry. Will his obsession be his downfall?
