Dali & Beyond Film Series: Like Water for Chocolate
The Dali & Beyond Film Series features an eclectic selection of films – both familiar and fantastic. April's film feature magic realiism, which is a genre associated especially with Latin America that expresses a primarily realist view of the world while adding or revealing magical elements, including this feature: Like Water for Chocolate. Based on the best-selling novel by Laura Esquival, this romantic fable from Mexico centers on the beautiful Tita, who is forbidden to marry her true love, Pedro. Since tradition dictates that Tita, the youngest daughter in her family, must care for her mother, Pedro weds her older sister, Rosaura, though he still loves Tita. The situation creates much tension in the family, and Tita's powerful emotions begin to surface in fantastical ways through her cooking. The free screening begins at 1 p.m. at the Dali Museum in St. Pete.
