Museums as Big as Our Beaches

Inject a dose of awesome art and cool culture into your trip with a visit to the many museums in St. Pete/Clearwater.

Start in St. Petersburg, the unofficial heart of fine art in the region. Get surreal at The Dalí Museum, which houses the largest collection of Salvador Dali’s work outside of Spain. The first permanent exhibit of Dale Chihuly, a master of glass work, is only a few long blocks away, and next door to it is the Morean Arts Center where you can witness local glass artists creating art live in the Glass Studio. Fine arts lovers will bask in the works of classical and contemporary masters like Renoir and Cézanne at the Museum of Fine Arts. Further north, the Leepa-Ratner Museum of Art is an enjoyable detour into the work of Expressionists Abraham Rattner and Allen Leepa.

History and culture museums provide a window to Florida’s—and the world’s—past. The Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Pete is a must-see for its moving presentation of Holocaust history. Regional history museums provide a pleasant stop—check out the Tarpon Springs Heritage Museum, which chronicles the town’s development into a Greek enclave, or the Dunedin Historical Museum in Dunedin, to learn about this city known for its Celtic roots. Then there’s the Tampa Bay Automobile Museum, a cool stop for gearheads, while families can gather at Great Explorations Children’s Museum for educational exhibits.
