Dunedin Scottish Highland Games
April 21, 2012
Dunedin, FL 34698
Celebrating the music, athletics, family heritage and dancing of Scotland, the annual Dunedin Highland Games honor the rich cultural history of our area. This grand tradition takes place on the shores of Wee Loch Ness, in Highlander Park in the town of Dunedin. The City of Dunedin Pipe Band, The Dunedin High School Scottish Highlanders Band and The Dunedin Highland Middle School Band all perform, in addition to sheepdog herding competitions, highland dancing competitions and the throwing of the Dunedin Stone -- a challenging event -- since the stone is weighing in at a whopping 100 pounds. In addition to the Dunedin Highland Games taking place on April 21, a whole week of Scottish events are planned to celebrate the long held traditions of Scotland.
Description
Highlander Park, with approximately 70 acres, is the City's second largest park. It is a multi-use recreation area which features the Dunedin Community Center, the Fine Art Center, an over-the-lake Pavilion, Highlander Pool, the Dunedin Nature Center, picnic tables and picnic shelters, tennis courts, sand volleyball, softball and little league fields. There is a Butterfly Garden and a "Sensory Garden for the Visually Impaired" near the Nature Center. The Bay Bouquet Garden Club provided the sensory garden. Visitors may enjoy a wide range of activities, from organized sports to picnicking; and there are three playgrounds available for the kids.
