St. Pete Restaurant Renaissance

The Sizzle: A Menu of New Restaurants
in St. Pete

St. Petersburg’s restaurant scene is enjoying a renaissance, with new, locally owned concepts cropping up at a dizzying pace. They run a wide culinary gamut, from traditional German to upscale Asian fusion to farm-to-table pizza.

Most of the new eateries are clustering downtown, but 4th Street — one of the main arteries heading northward from the urban core — is filling out as well. New projects of a more bohemian sort are happening just to the west — in the Edge and Grand Central districts.

Take a pictorial tour of several new restaurants that have debuted in recent weeks and months, and a couple that are coming soon.

1 The Cider Press Cafe

Probably the most ambitious concept in St. Pete’s culinary renaissance, The Cider Press Café caters to the vegan-raw food movement by serving vegetable-based dishes “cooked” at no more than 117 degrees (or not at all). Chef Patrice Murphy creates successfully appetizing meals from, for instance, taco shells made of flax and sunflower seeds, or noodles fashioned from kelp and zucchini. The place also offers terrific kombucha smoothies and cold-pressed juices.

2 Brick & Mortar

Owned and operated by husband and wife team Hope Montgomery and Jason Ruhe, this tiny gem of a restaurant came to fruition after a decade of running their own catering business - it's a rarity for caterers to launch a brick and mortar restaurant (thus the name) - but, we're so glad they did! Located on Central Avenue in downtown St. Pete, th New American cuisine is always fresh and pushes the envelope ever so slightly. When in doubt, order the Fat Noodles!

3 Buya Ramen

Edge District

Do you know how to slurp your way through broth and noodles? Perfect your skills at this classic Izakaya located in St. Pete's Edge District. Find various types of gyoza, kamameshi, and of course, fresh ramen made in-house. They offer up the largest selection of Japanese whisky in the Tampa Bay area - the perfect compliment to your meal!

4 Hofbräuhaus

St. Pete rolls out the barrels in a big way with this 16,000-square-foot, two-level German restaurant and beer garden. Hofbräuhaus dates back to 16th Century Bavaria. The St. Pete location will import its beer and much of its authentic German food from the flagship in Munich. Live bands will play rock, pop and polka.

5 The Mill

Located smack in the heart of downtown, The Mill mashes up inventive upscale cuisine — courtesy of rising chef Ted Dorsey — and a heady craft cocktail menu with a lively, pub-style atmosphere. The farm-meets-industrial interior design really catches the eye.

6 Souzou

Sleek, modern and sophisticated, Souzou raises the ante for Asian fusion cuisine in St. Pete. Start with uber-fresh sushi, sample steamed buns, sticky meatballs and other creative starters, then explore delectable rice and noodle dishes. Artisan cocktails, craft beers and an extensive sake list rounds out the experience. Souzou is located on the northern edge of downtown and offers easy parking.

7 Stillwaters Tavern

The latest restaurant concept on bustling Beach Drive, downtown’s Restaurant Row, Stillwaters bills itself as a “new American tavern.” The nautically themed, 250-seat eatery — with an ample covered deck on the sidewalk out front — delivers a particularly worldly take on pub food, courtesy of former Top Chef Jeffrey Jew. Craft beers and cocktails abound.

8 Noble Crust

4th Street

Founded by two partners in the original Bonefish Grill, Noble Crust boldly blends seasonal Italian and Southern soul food — that means Country Ham Pizza, Chicken-Fried Parm, Sweet Potato Ravioli and more. The ample patio has a retractable roof for year-round use.

9 King Street Food Counter

Edge District

The compact “fast casual new age diner” will serve a range of gourmet hot dogs, grilled cheese, poutines and custom milkshakes, with a few breakfast items sprinkled in. KSFC offers an enclosed courtyard, which feels like an intimate beer garden - plus, it's dog friendly! That means plenty of craft beers to choose from, too.

10 Urban Comfort

Grand Central

And now for something a bit more rustic. Restaurateur Andy Salyards converted a 1950s-era gas station into a no-frills joint that offers Southern “working class” food with quirky twists. Pork chops, fried chicken, shrimp-and-grits, chicken pot pie, a fried green tomato BLT, and fresh-caught fish dishes have made this new eatery popular with the locals.
