Today's wedding cakes aren't what they used to be. No longer are brides confined to traditional white cakes with three layers and the customary bride and groom topper. Cakes now, more than ever, are works of art that capture the true personality of the happy couple. And, of course, brides also want a cake that tastes good!

Cake designers know that each bride is unique, and so is her cake. There are many talented cake designers in the St. Pete/Clearwater area who work with Destination Wedding brides and grooms, to help them create that very special cake with their own personal touch. Two such St. Pete/Clearwater area designers are featured below. Both have local tasting rooms and kitchens where all their creations are lovingly baked from scratch with only the freshest ingredients available.

Celebration Cakes
Bonnie Yarbrough, owner of Celebration Cakes, is marking 10 years of helping couples create edible works of art to commemorate their nuptials. Working with Destination Wedding brides, she finds that many of them are having beach weddings and want a cake that reflects some aspect of the beach. This could mean including decorative seashells, sand dollars, coral sea fans or starfish as part of the decoration. Or, it could mean something as elaborate as building a cake in the shape of a sand castle. And, the best part is that all the trimmings are edible, made of Belgian white chocolate, butter cream or carefully sculpted sugar.

Yarbrough also works a lot with fondant. Fondant, which is very popular in Europe, has a dough-like consistency and is used on cakes to create a "smooth as snow" outer appearance on the cake. Bits of fondant can also be shaped into flowers, bows and other decorations to really create a spectacular finish to the cake.

Of course, Celebration Cakes also designs more traditional wedding cakes, including ones modeled after the bride's dress. Yarbrough works closely with brides to create not only something that is delicious to the palate, but is also delicious to the eyes. So, if your thoughts about the perfect Destination Wedding cake are a "Tommy Bahama" palm tree lined cake or a more traditional tiered cake with the beading from your gown, Celebration Cakes can make your dreams come true.

Chantilly Cakes
Working with recipes formulated over the past 20 years, Desiree Chamberlin owner of Chantilly Cakes, also deals with many Destination Wedding brides. Beginning with a consultation including a full tasting, Chamberlin listens to brides thoughts and helps them to determine the perfect cake design to mark the special day. From simple and sophisticated to elegant or ornamental, Chantilly Cakes has also created many unique cakes that incorporate the special feel that is the St. Pete/Clearwater area.

Working strictly with butter cream, Chamberlin has fashioned such innovative cakes as this octopus cake, for lovers of the deep sea. Starting with a typical three-tiered round cake, the addition of distinctive decorations result in a one-of-a-kind masterwork. Of course, brides can choose from any size or number of layers, including the use of specialty pans, to make the outside of the cake architecturally unique.

Beautiful wedding cakes are just the start. Some brides also opt for grooms cakes and wedding shower cakes. Chantilly Cakes has a complete line of delicious and exquisitely designed cakes for these wedding related occasions. So, you can have your cake and eat it too!
