Leepa-Rattner Museum in Tarpon Springs, Florida
The Leepa-Rattner Museum houses works by Chagall and Picasso.

One of the area’s best-kept cultural secrets is the wealth of museums in Tarpon Springs. The Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art at St. Petersburg College houses much more than art by 20th-century surrealist Abraham Rattner. Works by Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, Marc Chagall, Auguste Herbin, Georges Rouault, Hans Hofman and Max Ernst, many of them Rattner’s friends and contemporaries, are also displayed there, as well as traveling exhibitions. Of particular interest to Henry Miller fans is an exhibit of Rattner’s correspondence with the noted author.

Tarpon Springs also offers two interesting history museums. Colorful murals depicting the state from the 16th century to modern times hang inside the Tarpon Springs Heritage Museum (727) 937-0686. The town’s rich Greek heritage is celebrated with a vintage photograph collection and a movie. The Safford House Museum (727) 937-1130 is a restored 1800s Victorian home where you can see what life was like more than 100 years ago.
