The Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 – that's the total number of miles covered by competitors – took place on November 14, 2009, and included 1,500 athletes. Among those lining up at Pier 60 at Clearwater Beach for the 6:45 a.m. swim start was celebrity chef and author Rocco DiSpirito. Entrants, like DiSpirito, typically train 15-30 hours per week and must qualify at one of the 31 worldwide Ironman events in order to participate in this challenging event.
Germany's Michael Raelert and Great Britain's Julie Dibens claimed victory at the 2009 Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3, Presented by Ford. Athletes aren't the only ones in the thick of the action, though. This exciting annual event draws a great spectator crowd too.
The city of Clearwater hosted the triathalon event on a picture-perfect day in 2009, and preparations are already in place for an even better event in 2010. The Ironman 70.3 Series culminates its world championship in Clearwater. By qualifying at one of the 31 Ironman 70.3 events held around the world, more than 1,800 domestic and international competitors earn the right to compete in the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3.
The Ironman World Championship consists of 24 age group slots and 20 professional slots. Each age group winner in Clearwater will qualify for the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 event. A professional prize purse totaling $100,000 is offered.
Just like last year's event, the 2010 race will start and finish at Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach. The nearby Harborview Center and Sheraton Sand Key Resort hosted several of the pre-and post-race activities, including athlete check-in and the banquet functions.
