The city's Grand Central District comes to life with St. Pete Pride.

With the unfurling and parading of a 900-foot rainbow flag, St. Petersburg's Grand Central District comes to life in June as the St. Pete Pride Celebration celebrates the arts, history and culture of the gay community.

The celebration includes the Promenade parade with more than 100 entries and an eight-block-long street festival with 250 vendors, music stages, a kids' zone and food and beverages. Other events on the month-long slate of activities include community outreach parties, an antique car show, cultural exhibitions and art auctions. The annual event began in 2003, with participation growing every year.

Other related activities throughout June include Pride-themed theater at American Stage Theatre and baseball gatherings at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, as well as AIDS awareness fundraising walks and other festivities.

In 2010, the event celebrates its eighth year. Event organizers say it's the largest Pride celebration in Florida, with about 75,000 people attending each year.
